From the Editor's Desk
Dear All,

Greetings of the day!

Highlights of this issue is the study by Mantel A and his team published in November issue of Arthritis and Rheumatology. In this study, authors investigated risk factors for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with new-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Smoking, history of myocardial infarction and >50 days of sick leave in the year following RA onset were associated with a high risk of ACS. High inflammatory markers for example, high C-reactive protein level, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and high Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS28), and global health during the first year and the complete follow-up period were both strongly associated with an increased risk of ACS. Interestingly, in this study, authors did not find any change in risk of ACS with treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and no increased risk in patients whom rheumatoid factor (RF) or shared epitope alleles were present. In previous studies, RF positivity was linked to cardiovascular risk in patients with RA.
