It is with great pleasure that I present to you the June issue of the IRA e-newsletter for the year 2024, centred around the theme of “Holistic Health in Rheumatology with a focus on comorbidities”.

Chronic diseases, akin to uninvited houseguests, persist in our lives, often reshaping the way our bodies function. Rheumatologists must possess a thorough understanding of managing rheumatic diseases alongside common comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes. Moreover, monitoring modifiable factors becomes crucial in preventing their onset. As most rheumatic diseases now allow for near-normal lifespans, it becomes our responsibility to ensure that our patients not only live long lives but also healthy ones. Our endeavour should be to build a future where comorbidities are managed, anticipated, and prevented.

The inaugural section delves into the historical recognition of comorbidities in rheumatic diseases, offering mechanistic insights alongside tailored approaches to management.

We have interviewed two esteemed rheumatologists for this issue with Dr. Amita Aggarwal giving us pearls of wisdom on selecting research interests and Dr. Mike Putman sharing practical tips on how to read clinical trials.

Our quarterly reviews encompass noteworthy articles of this quarter on basic sciences, clinical sciences, and paediatric rheumatology. We also have captivating images and thought-provoking quizzes, skilfully curated by our authors.

Recognising that life extends beyond work and material pleasures, we embrace the importance of leisure in the “Life Beyond” section. Here, authors share their personal experiences in culinary pursuits and pen collecting, inviting readers to indulge in their passions beyond the realms of professional obligations.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all contributors for their dedication and efforts. I am equally thankful to the members of the IRA newsletter editorial board for entrusting me with the opportunity to contribute to this issue.
