Secretary’s Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is my honour to welcome you to the official website of the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA), the apex professional body committed to advancing rheumatology and clinical immunology in India through education, research, ethical practice, and service to society.
Rheumatology in India occupies a uniquely challenging and evolving space. Our patients present with a high burden of immune-mediated inflammatory rheumatic diseases, often with late
referrals, overlapping infections, diverse genetic backgrounds, and significant socioeconomic constraints. In this context, rheumatology must integrate sound immunological science with
pragmatic, resource-sensitive clinical decision-making.
Recent advances in immunopathogenesis spanning around cytokine networks, immune cellular biology , genetic and epigenetic regulation, and immune metabolic interactions have transformed the therapeutic landscape. The expanding use of biologic agents and targeted synthetic DMARDs necessitates continuous academic engagement, indigenous data generation, and context-appropriate guidelines. IRA remains steadfast in its responsibility to guide this transition responsibly and scientifically.
This website is envisioned as a dynamic academic and professional platform facilitating dissemination of guidelines, educational activities, conference updates, research initiatives, and member engagement. Special emphasis is placed on nurturing early-career rheumatologists.
As India strengthens its healthcare ecosystem, IRA remains committed to collaborate with international rheumatology organizations to improve awareness, access, and outcomes for patients with rheumatic and autoimmune diseases in India and beyond. Guided by scientific rigor and our constitutional values, we aim to advance rheumatology that is globally informed and locally relevant.
Best wishes,
Dr Rajkiran Dudam
